Veraja Barbir House
In the old part of Metković there is also the house of the Veraja family, which is a very interesting and very well-preserved example of residential architecture from the mid-19th century. Its design follows traditional architecture characterized by simple forms, while the facade decoration follows the then Art Nouveau style in a somewhat sparser version. Its special feature is the so-called avlija, a courtyard that was enclosed by a high wall, which is a common occurrence in the traditional architecture of Metković at that time, and its roots, like its name, probably derive from Ottoman architecture. The house and its courtyard are now owned by the Barbir family. The courtyard of this house is often used as an excellent stage for classical and contemporary music concerts during the summer months.
