SPORTS HALL

Sports hall

At the very end of Sportska Street, on Trg dr. Franjo Tuđmana, near the Iza Vage stadium , the main city Sports Hall was built in 1982. It is a simple concrete building with metal formwork, and its special feature is the roof structure with a V-shaped cross-section. Its dimensions are 51 x 50 meters, with a seating capacity for about 3,000 spectators. Today, the hall is mostly associated with handball, which is one of the sports and general symbols of the city of Metković, especially with the Metković Mehanika handball club , which was founded in 1963. The club experienced its greatest success during the 1970s and at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, when it competed in the first Croatian handball league and won the EHF Cup in 1999. The club has produced many notable handball players, such as Patrik Čavar, Nikša Kaleb, Slavko Goluža, Ivica Obrvan. The hall is now used by Metković's basketball, indoor football and other sports clubs, and is also used for concerts, as is the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square in front of it.
