SMALL AND LARGE RIVA

Small and Large Riva

The development of the port and waterfront in Metković began during the Austrian rule, already at the end of the 19th century, and from that time today the Mala and Velika Riva originate. These are stone banks with docks for mooring smaller and larger ships located on the left bank of the Neretva River, stretching from the City Park and the Port Bridge to Liman. Today, a small marina for ships has been built on the Mala Riva. The Mala Riva is also associated with the Metković carnival customs when an effigy of the main culprit for all the bad things that happened in the previous year, Prince Marko Krnjeval, is burned there. On the Velika Riva, in recent times, a monumental bronze monument to the fallen defenders of the Homeland War and a 105-millimeter howitzer were also erected. In 2014, a city light display was erected on the Velika Riva in memory of the centenary of the arrival of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofia in Metković on their way to Sarajevo.
