CITY PARK

City park

The Metković City Park is located in the very center of the city, and was created on an area that was created in the mid-19th century by filling in the river island of Pisak. Its beginnings date back to 1906, when it was officially opened, and it is known that more than 150 different species of trees and plants were planted there, and some species were brought from the Middle East by ships that docked in the Metković port. A special atmosphere was given to it by a wrought iron pavilion. Those most responsible for the creation of the city park, i.e. the park, were Ilija Bošnjak and the clerk Bitel, who was employed at the Agricultural School in Metković. In place of the removed pavilion, after World War II, a cannon was erected that was pulled from the Neretva River, and which was removed after the 1990s. A simple monument erected in memory of the victims of the anti-fascist struggle during World War II also dates back to the same time. During the 20th century, the park was also flanked by the Korzo, a promenade that was the main gathering place and socializing spot for the young people of Metkovic at the time. The city park was thoroughly renovated at the beginning of the 21st century, when paths were arranged and a fountain was built. Today, the park is an important gathering place for Metkovic residents of all ages and their guests, and is also an excellent open-air stage for various events and music concerts.
