upstream to Mala riva\, where the exit pontoons for the so-called portage
have been set up\, which\, along with the start and finish\, is the most i
nteresting part of the race. Here\, the athletes exit and run to carry the
ir boats to the boat launch ramp under the bridge\, where entry pontoons w
ill be set up\, through which the athletes enter the boat\, row upstream t
o the marked second turning point around the buoy\, and continue downstrea
m to the lower turning point. The number of laps that the athletes must co
mplete\, as well as the number of boat portages\, is determined by the com
petition rules for each category. Whitewater kayaking and canoeing are wat
er sports in which competitors compete by rowing boats over designated sec
tions. There are two types of boats for this sport\, the kayak and the can
oe. The difference is that in kayaking\, each rower uses a two-bladed padd
le\, while in canoeing\, each rower uses a single-bladed paddle. To better
apply force\, it is customary for the canoeist to kneel on one leg while
rowing\, while the kayaker sits facing the direction of travel\, and they
are propelled by an oar held loosely in their hands. Whitewater kayaking i
 s a competition of speed\, strength\, and endurance\, and kayaking has bee
n an Olympic sport since 1936. VENUE
